The space between footnotes is probably due to the 'Footnote Text' style settings.
Click in any footnote.
On the Home tab of the ribbon, click the little arrow in the lower right corner of the Styles group.
This activates the Styles task pane.
Click the Style Inspector button (the second one from the left at the bottom of the pane).
You'll see that the footnote uses the 'Footnote Text' style.
Click in the box and select Modify... from the dropdown menu.
Select Format > Paragraph...
Make sure that Space Before and Space After is set to 0, and you probably also want to set Line Spacing to Single.
