Office Compatibility Pack retired April 2018

Post by HansV »

Microsoft has announced that the Office Compatibility Pack will be retired in April of 2018, i.e. it will no longer be available for download from Microsoft and it will no longer receive security updates.
The Office Compatibility Pack lets users with Office 2000, 2002 (aka XP) and 2003 open and edit Word documents, Excel workbooks and PowerPoint presentations that have been saved in the Office 2007 and later format (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx etc.)
If you're still using Office 2000, 2002 or 2003 and don't have the Office Compatibility Pack, it is a good idea to download and install it now. It will keep on working after the retirement date, even though it is not supported anymore.

See Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats
Best wishes,
Hans

Possibly worth adding that this offering is also called [Microsoft Office] File Format Converters (as is the .exe file!), and that its 'final' file size is 37 MB. I had an earlier version whose file size was just over 27 MB, so if you've already got it/want it you might want to check this metric.
