Java Applets

I am suddenly getting a message that Java Applets do not run. I'm using Windows XP (SP 3) and this has not happened in the past; seems to have started when I installed IE8. I went to the Java website and there's a bunch of instructions for going into Control Panel/Java/Advanced and being certain Internet Explorer is checked. I did that and followed any other instructions including re-installing. Nothing seems to work and I cannot use Java on this computer. Any suggestions?

I have moved this thread from the Windows 7 forum where you posted it, since you mention that you're using Windows XP SP3.

Also check your Internet Options:

- Start Internet Explorer.
- Select Tools | Internet Options...
- Activate the Security tab.
- Click Custom Level...
- Make sure that "Scripting of Java applets" is set to Enable.
- Click OK.

Also try the following:

- Start Internet Explorer.
- Select Tools | Internet Options...
- Activate the Programs tab.
- Click Manage add-ons.
- If necessary click Toolbars and Extensions (probably already selected).
- Make sure that all items under Sun MicroSystems are enabled.

Can you give an example of a website where you get this error message?

There have been some changes in the support for depreciated HTML features among which the <applet> tag. Most sites should have been updated by now, but it's possible that some older sites still use the <applet> tag.

It should display a record on the left side and if you click on the View Image link on the right side,it is supposed to display a deed, but all I get is an error message.

Java does start, but then I get a series of warnings, first that there's something wrong with the digital certificate, then that there's a security problem:

I didn't go any further. But the main point is that Java does start for me in IE8.

I went to the above link, got the protection message, but click on in and all worked just fine.
This was on my Windows 7 64 bit machine using IE 3 2bit.

Yes, I can do all of this on my Windows 7 machine at home; unfortunately, still can't do in the office and I'm forced to go to one of our other computers when I need this feature. I'll keep searching for an answer. Hans, I didn't get any of those messages; actually nothing happens.

Did you look at the Manage add-ons dialog, as suggested higher up in this thread? (Post=25575)

Yes, everything that was supposed to be checked, was checked.

Does Java work in other browsers, such as Firefox, Chrome or Opera?

I do not have any of those browsers on my computer/

Well, I had called the Help Desk for Broward County and they just called back. They had me go into Settings on their website and change Auto Load from No to Yes and change Image Viewer to Use from tiffy to PDF and it's now working.

Thanks for the tips; I've saved them in my notebook because I have no doubt I will re-visit this subject at some point

I assume that you have also ensured that Java is enabled in the Java control panel > Java tab > View...:

I'm afraid I've run out of ideas - we seem to have exhausted the places where Java can be enabled/disabled. I hope that someone else will have a helpful suggestion.
