Editing a post

There is a grace period of about 5 minutes after submitting a post during which the "Edited by" message will not appear; after that it will be added automatically when you edit a post.

My alter ego Dopje performed some tests in the thread Edit Test which pointed to a period of 5 minutes during which the "Edited by" message didn't appear.

In testing your theory, I did two or three edits at different times and made it a point to wait three or four minutes and didn't get the notation.

Perhaps my time runs faster, because it was certainly my impression that I obtained an edited line somewhere over two minutes. But five minutes is Even More Betterer!

I'm not getting any edited messages, even after a prolonged period of time. It ain't no big deal and I couldn't care less if there ever is a message, but I wonder why we're all seeing diffent results?

It might have to do with whether there are replies or not. I'm testing that now.

I was wrong - apparently there is no fixed grace period. There will be no "Last edited by" message if there are no replies, but there will if you edit after a reply has been made.

So you are saying that as long as no one replies we can keep editing it to BUMP it up to the top and no one will know it?

'frayed knot. Editing a post does NOT bump it to the top. (Just tested to confirm).

Editing a post does not change its timestamp as it did in wwwthreads, so it won't bump the thread.

The software this Lounge runs on has a special feature: if a thread that you started hasn't had new replies in more than 10 days, a "Bump topic" button will appear - see screenshot (this one is for the prosilver skin):

Clicking the button will "bump" the thread to the top of the forum.

Most of you will not see this button yet since we only went "live" 8 days ago.

Please use the "Bump topic" button only if really necessary - abuse will not be tolerated.

No problem here John. For some time the Bride and I have been driving SUV/Station wagon type vehicles where the boot/trunk is open and accessible from the front of the vehicle. Because "put it in the back" could mean either the back seat or the rear-most compartment, we now call them, respectively, "the back" and "the backest".

Ahh, my parents always drove station wagons until the last of my siblings were out of the house and the reference in my family to that rear-most compartment was either the "rear-end" or the "back-to-back."
