Login Problems

Post by BobH »

Several times over the last week or so, I've been unable to login to Eileen's Lounge.

I don't know if those problems have been due to the Lounge's servers or if they have been at my end. When I've had problem it has been only with Eileen's Lounge. I've been able to login to other websites I frequent and to receive and send email

I have some suspicion that my ISP (T-Mobile5G Cellular) might be the cause. It doesn't allow me to choose my DNS server, forcing me to rely on their choice. I don't even know - and have not learned from their help desk - what DNS servers they use. It might be their DNS Servers or something else or even be unrelated to my ISP.

Has anyone else experienced this lately? (Or, as I suspect, am I just 'special'.)

I haven't experienced problems recently - the frequent timeouts we saw in September appear to have gone away.
Best wishes,
Hans

I think I got the "Too many users are logged on" message once yesterday, but only the once...

I was searching around a lot of older thread post the last few days. Moving around from one place to another often resulted in me being logged out, but that is fairly normal I think. I have had no problems logging back in, and only once briefly had a page not available error, but just very briefly.

I think your experience confirms my suspicion that my ISP's DNS servers are not the best.

I've been using this cellular ISP service for a few months now with relatively few issues until very recently. The issues mostly present themselves in very slow response time, which I would not have expected because it is 5G based. All of my previous ISP services have been cable based.

Thanks for the feedback.

T-Mobile prioritizes its phone data over the internet service. So, during heavy usage times during the day you will see diminished response times. Also, T-Mobile says its max download speed is 245 Mbs. You will most likely never see that.

Thanks, Joe.

Yes, I'm aware that phone traffic is prioritized ahead of internet traffic, and I've experienced that. Recently, I've experienced lags and latency in periods when phone traffic would be expected to be normal or low; however, I have no way to know what that traffic actually is.

It's just been weird. Perhaps I live too close to Austin.

We had T-Mobile home internet in Florida for 2+ seasons and finally a month or so ago I gave up. The lags and latency were so bad that TV was often unwatchable during the daylight hours not to mention atrociously slow download speeds. We went with wired Xfinity. It is a little more expensive but faster as so far much more reliable.

I seedk clarification on this.
"Too many users" as I understand it here does NOT refer to too many John Grays or Chris Greaveses, but rather to the number of program-modules trying to use the SQL machinery.
In the PrtScr above, the user seems to be defined as "eileenslounge", which is an installation/implementation of phpBB software on a server somewhere.

Clarification of this point is welcomed.
Thanks, Chris

The number of "user connections" is roughly proportional to, but not equal to, the number of users (people, bots) visiting Eileen's Lounge.
A page such as the Lounge Portal uses many database connections, because it gathers all kinds of data from different parts of the Lounge database
Best wishes,
Hans

I had trouble again today logging in here. I was getting the Secure Connection Failed message for this url.

After a lot of futzing around, I discovered that my VPN was not loaded or connected. I loaded and connected it, and BINGO! Here I am.

Posted in case it might help a future searcher landing here.

I received the message. I immediately tried logging in again, and it worked.

So it all seems a bit random.

I should not have read this thread. Since reading it about 5 minutes ago, I got the below error three times just switching pages.

As explained by Hans many times now, the login problems have got nothing to do with what we are doing. The problems stem from the number of bots crawling over the site. Too many of them and there isn't enough capacity for us, real users, to be able to use the The Lounge.

Yes, it's an inconvenience to keep getting these errors but, as a colleague of mine often said when we had a problem at work, "At least nobody died."

Except of boredom: <F5> to refresh, <Enter> to Resend the data, ad nauseum. A Boring and Repetitive task for this user, a task which, I was promised 50+ years ago, was suitable for computers.

But Ken, your comment about " us, real users," triggers hope.
Why not set aside, somehow, enough slots to satisfy Real Users and then let the bots fight it out amongst them selves?
We could define a Real User in many different ways, but one way might be to flag accounts that are in the user database, and optionally have logged on within the past six months.

I refuse to accept that bright young humans can't solve this problem. :stubborn, digging in heels:

Cheers, Chris
