I find myself unable to change my avatar.
About a month ago Hans and I started fooling around with rotating my avatar.
Then I tried to rotate it back to its original rotation.
I can't make it "stick".
Over the years I have uploaded several images,
(1) Me as a young chorister
(2) Me as a mature consultant
and in the past four years
(3) The front of my house
(4) A saltbox house near the school
(5) My “hands in face” shot
(6) Hans’s rotated shot
(7) My rotated-more shot
(8) At least three more attempts at replacement.
I have a sneaking suspicion that phpBB software has a limit of nine/ten or 15/16 and I have blown that limit.
I have essayed over the past three? weeks with brand new images, not just a re-rotated “hands in face”, but now find that I cannot change my avatar.
I can't see why there would be a limit; I can't see why phpBB would store a record of avatar changes. FWIW I change my signature each month and have been getting away with that for at least three years (so 36 changes)
THIS IS NOT A CRITICAL ISSUE and I am probably the only idiot idiotic enough to amuse itself by changing my avatar.
But if anyone can suggest a way to “dislodge” my profile to make the avatar changeable, I am willing to try.
Thanks, Chris

There is no limit. If you cannot get it to stick using a new filename, let us know. The admins can fix it for you if necessary.
Best wishes,
Hans

Yes, my thoughts exactly.
Did you save the image you want to use with a different name? Maybe the thought here is 'Hey, this is already in use, why bother doing the work.'
Ceci n'est pas une signature.

Re: Limit on changes to user avatar?
Thanks Stuart.
I have tried with the same name (95.jpg), a variation on the original name (95a.jpg), and a totally different name (e.g. eraseme.jpg)
Along the way I tried creating a new file in MSPaint, same name, different name, and as well created a new image from a different graphic (that is, nit the original hidden-face I have been using for about two years).
Cheers, Chris

Re: Limit on changes to user avatar?
Thanks Hans.
I will try with a new image and name later today.
It is not critical - even though it appears that I am lying on my side, most folks will only get as far as "He is lying again!"
I am mainly curious as to what is preventing the set of the new image. That is, I do not expect anyone to dive into the phpBB code.
At this time I shall keep a careful log of what I try and when, then if it does dislodeg, we might have a clue.
Cheers, Chris
(If all else fails I shall resurrect myself as John Grey .... )

Re: Limit on changes to user avatar?
There is an option to delete your avatar. I've always used that before I've changed my user pic.
What happens if you try that option? Does that remove your user pic, leaving your posts with no avatar? If it does, that might give you a clean slate and thus enable a new image to be uploaded.

Re: Limit on changes to user avatar?
Thanks Ken.
Yes, I used the Delete option in various ways - delete before upload, delete after upload then re-upload etc.
I see that Hans has helped me to my feet.
Now, If I wait a day then try to change it and it doesn't change, which of us will be upset?
Cheers, Chris

Re: Limit on changes to user avatar?
Quite so. But then I suspect that you don't go looking for problems (G&DR!)

We can provide an Avatar, if you like, Geoff...
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Best wishes,
