Menu vanish after Adding File Add File Bug? Attachment Quirk

Post by Doc.AElstein »

Hello

This is not a major problem. It might be just my old computers craping out.

I just thought I would mention it in passing:

Sometime after I add a file, that is to say, after hitting the Add the file button the menus vanish

It is not a major problem. If I edit, then usually , the thing sorts itself out

Not a problem. Just thought I would mention it.. I expect it is more likely at my end than a forum Bug. I sometimes see odd quirks like before https://www.eileenslounge.com/viewtopic ... t=+Braille" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi Hans
At the moment I see just www
wwwAtTheMoment .JPG : https://imgur.com/ZiwOuqE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
wwwAtTheMoment .JPG
I think I have sometimes seen https:// as well sometimes. It seems to vary a lot by me from time to time. It seems to vary as well on different computers.

I only get the problem sometimes.
The next time I have the problem I will make a point of checking what I see up there in address bar of my browser, and experiment a bit

Thanks
Alan

This is definitely caused by an incompatibility between the version of PHP used by the lounge and https:
You can resolve it by switching to a non-encrypted http: connection to the lounge, or you can just ignore it.

I have seen this a few times now, as soon as I chop of the https , then all is well
So it all seems to tie up with what you are saying

What happens if you were to use the " http:/" pre fix?

I have never been one to drop the ' http:/" or the "www" and have not had issues.
Just because on may be able to not need them, it sure pays off to always to use them.

But be sure to use the " https:/" when needed at a secured site.

Hi Dave,

If I try to use http:/ then it seems to change to show just www or sometimes nothing at the start of the full URL, ....but see my observations below…**

I am not too cued up on what the difference in the things is, but usually it seems that https:// is described as something to do with being safer to use than http://
I don't understand anything more than that about it
I have often heard of some compatibility problems when people have change their site to be https://

The issue I had here is the only time I ever noticed a difference.
I use mostly Google Chrome and occasionally internet explorer.
It seems to be random by me whether I see a link in the browser bar starting with
https://
http://
www
or even sometime nothing: URL Bar .jpg : https://imgur.com/pe1uQ5X" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
URL Bar.JPG

I can have the same link on a different tab at the same time with any of those variations showing
_._________________________

** However, I just did a quick experiment on a few browsers on a few computers , and I found something interesting

If I copy a URL from any URL Bar showing https:// as the start bit in the link, and then paste that into a Word or text doc then it shows the link with the https:// In other words I get in the word or text doc exactly what I see in the URL bar.

But the interesting thing is this: If I copy a URL with any other start bit in it at the start , even the example with nothing at the start, and then do the same thing with that, then it is always gets pasted as having at the start
http://

So possibly we only have those two possibilities.
https:// is shown if you are using it.
If you are using http:// , then you may see in the URL bar
http://
www
or nothing at the start.
At least that is how it appears to me after a quick experiment just now

By the way, occasionally the https:// does not work properly apparently and so you need to be careful
https://www.excelforum.com/suggestions- ... perly.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That is as far as I know about these things.

A URL that starts http:// sends plain text between your web browser and the web server.

A URL that starts https:// uses encryption between your web browser and the web server. This used to be SSL encryption but nowadays is mostly TLS. This encryption uses a security certificate loaded on the server, which can be used to prove that you are connected to the correct server. If the URL on the certificate doesn't match the URL you connected to then the browser warns you of possible spoofing.

The version of PHP that we use in the lounge does not support encryption, so you get a number of display problems. The admins have considered what would be needed to upgrade the lounge to a version that does support https, but this would require a LOT of work and would probably break many features of the lounge. So we have decided to leave well alone.

Thanks Stuart,
I guess maybe it is less important for somewhere like the Lounge as the people organising it know a lot about the computer stuff working it , so probably would notice better than other sites owners if some spammer or similar was trying to mess about ?
or is it just to do with the way along, that is to say the stuff in between the forum and a user when he goes to the site ?
