Keep on server

Post by silverback »

Windows XP - Internet Explorer 8 - Office 2007.
A friend has just had to have his PC rebuilt (motherboard died)
He is now using Outlook Express (previously Outlook before the rebuild) and is suffering a strange effect in that sometimes, he gets multiple copies of the same email. This seems to correspond (he hasn't done a scientific study) to the server going down while downloading emails.
This leads me to believe that it might be a result of having an option 'keep mail on server' so that when he next downloads email, the old ones which have already been delivered are downloaded again.

Is that likely? If it is, where do I tell him to look so the option can be turned off, please?

Thanks

In Outlook Express:
- Select Tools | Accounts...
- Activate the Mail tab.
- Select the e-mail account.
- Click Properties...
- Activate the Advanced tab.
- Clear the check box "Leave messages on the server".
- Click OK.
- Click Close.
Then quit and restart Outlook Express.
Best wishes,
Hans

If the connection is lost during a download, it is quite likely emails will be downloaded again if the setting to leave them on the server is selected. I can't remember the technical term for what happens, but I believe emails are marked as 'read' (i.e. downloaded) on the server at the end of the download session. Outlook/Outlook Express also keeps a record of what it has downloaded, and again I believe if the session is interrupted, this list will not be updated, leading to duplicate downloads.

Mail servers aren't supposed to go down! Complain bitterly and with enthusiasm...

Since I played with Outlook Express as part of helping my friend, I now find Windows Messenger is running and there is an icon in the system tray. I've tried to find a service that's doing this but have failed.
How can I stop this happening, please?
Thanks

If you don't want it, I think you can completely uninstall Windows Messenger from Add/Remove Programs - look under the Windows components.

Got quite excited then - but a) it does not appear at all in Add/Remove Programs and b) there is no uninstall option on the 'All Programs' menu (it's only a shortcut in there, anyway).
Found the folder which holds the application, but this doesn't have an uninstall either.

There must be a start up service for this, although I can't find it to stop it.
Can I just delete the ProgramFiles/Messenger folder?

I knew I shouldn't have touched it!

Thanks

1) Start Outlook Express.
Select Tools | Options...
Activate the General tab.
Clear the check box "Automatically log on to Windows Messenger".
Click OK.
Close Outlook Express.

2) In Windows, click on Start | Control Panel.
Double click on Add or Remove Programs.
Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
Clear the check box for Windows Messenger.
Click Next >.
Click Finish.

You'll have to restart your computer.
Best wishes,
Hans

:thankyou: to Leif and Hans.
User error, I'm afraid. Did not read Leif's posting carefully enough. I was looking in Add/Remove Programs, not Windows Components (which, actually, I've never noticed before - so thanks for that, too!).

Peace reigns on my PC again.

Many thanks
