isn't that typical

Post by stuck »

For many months now every time my mother's (Win 8.1) laptop was booted it gave a message about a service failing, which would prevent regular users doing stuff but not impact admin users. My mother's account is an admin one, her profile is the only one on the machine so there's been no pressing need to figure what's wrong. I've at long last had a chance to bring the laptop home to investigate what's causing the message and guess what?
Spoiler
No error when I boot it.

Very typical, indeed. I imagine some log of the error/message is still around.

In a couple of years with AI we will not be able to tell if a computer is pulling our leg, sniggers behind our backs and then tell it to other computers.* The only solution will be to buy a new computerised plastic pal (be sure to remove the old one first, they can interact with each other over the air, I've heard).

*The problem is that we could already be there. How can we be sure it hasn't just made up that error: 0xA IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL [because it's my day off]. And with MSFT's Windows 10 putting itself at the centre of attention, taking half a day for updates, we will soon be back to manual work. Yay.

Even if it does throw up the error message again when I take it back I'm not going to do anything about it, as it has no impact on what my mother does on the machine and shortness of life comes to mind.

BTW, forgot to mention  it being a reversed Pauli effect.

You might be lucky, Ken, dealing with 'remote failures'.
Consider the number of 'panic attacks' possible;
- when ones partner uses pc or smartphone
- and wants it to work a 'spacial way'
- and modifies (tries to ...)
- not in accord with the product design or capability. :hairout:
Many a challenging hour spent.

Which reminds me of a situation I found myself in during my 'early days'.
Asked boss in conference room if I could use his office phone to make an important call.
Wandered to his office ...phone was a complex affair ... what do I do?
"Hey boss", I called down the corridor, "How do I use your phone "
To which his answer was
"Pick up the ### handset".

Typical Young Amateur

A true professional would take advantage of this opportunity to issue a Change Order and fix the computer.
