Windows Update Failure

Post by Cah »

Just tried to update Windows 7 64bit. No issues with slowness but most of the updates failed with either a 80070643 or 80072A91 error message. I've tried multiple times to update but keep getting failures. What is additionally strange is that at one point I got the Green Symbol with the message that security updates were up-to-date but then when I ran Windows Update again it was back to missing updates that failed to install. Has anyone else experienced such issues or knows of a solution? Thanks

Just my :2cents: , but here is an article that could help...

If the above advice does not help, try running the updates manually, in small batches. For example if you do two or three at a time (starting with important updates), then you can see if (or which) update(s) are the culprits of the error. If you can find out which update(s) cause the error, it might be easier to find specific troubleshooting options to overcome the issue to.

Thanks for the replies, I went though the changes suggested from your links but am still having trouble. One link suggested updating the Windows Updating Service with KB3020369 and KB3172605. The first I had, the second failed. This is the inforamtion about the failures:

--------------------------
Update for Windows (KB3172605)
Installation date: ?27/?11/?2016 12:37
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80071A91
Update type: Important
Fix for KB3172605

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3177186)
Installation date: ?27/?11/?2016 12:52
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80071A91
Update type: Important

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3185911)

Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80071A91
Update type: Important

October, 2016 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64 (KB3188740)
Installation date: ?27/?11/?2016 12:52
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070643
Update type: Important

November, 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3197868)
Installation date: ?27/?11/?2016 12:52
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80071A91
Update type: Important
--------------------------------------------

I wonder why the date is showing in a strange way. I should add that my default setting is never to check for updates and I always update manually. I tried the updates one at a time but they are all failing. I've rescanned my computer for viruses etc but it shows up clean.

See this page about this issue and how to resolve it:

http://superuser.com/questions/524125/w ... e-80071a91" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Regardless, you might want to skip update KB3172605 which was originally released in July 2016 since it is known to break Intel Bluetooth drivers. KB3172605 was re-released again in September 2016, but I don't know if this issue was resolved. I blocked KB3172605 since it is a Recommended update and not a Security update. You might consider doing the same.

It is my understanding that this issue is no longer an issue, MS fixed a few weeks ago, e.g. see here, which includes a link to the MS Answers forum where someone from S said ti was OK again:
https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/h ... e-problem/

Also, it is my experience that the problem has been fixed, the last time I updated my Win 7 netbook it did so in only a few minutes.

stuck (Ken) is correct that now there are no longer huge delays for Win7 and Win8 users who are trying to install updates. Almost exactly one month ago to the day, I installed a fresh copy of Win7 SP1 on a newly built computer. I then started to carefully install updates, mostly in the order in which they were originally released, while hiding botched updates and updates which install telemetry. The first check for updates took less than 5 minutes and gave me a list of of roughly 200 updates to install.
