Unrecognised usb device (memstick)

Post by RonH »

Is this a safe method? I read it direct Microsoft but with so much AI uncertainty these days can I be sure it's a genuine and safe procedure... that the USB Controllers will auto reinstall.
(Note that the memstick I refer to is recognised on another pc).

Reinstall USB controllers
This method resolves steps where the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupted.

Select Start, then type device manager in the Search box, and then select Device Manager.
Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Press and hold (or right-click) a device and select Uninstall. Repeat for each device.
Once complete, restart your computer. Your USB controllers will automatically install.

Ran 1st test which seems to have fixed the problem.
Microsoft seem to have a long path to get to Device Manager when all you need to do is rt click Start and select it. Just in case of any error, I ran the test using both methods.

I spoke too soon ... went to uninstall the first controller and system froze ... managed to restart.
I think that I will just accept that this specific memstick cannot be used on new pc
This is the list of controllers ... is there a specific one per USB device?

Hans,
I just had to investigate!
To determine which controller/hub the external USB device is connected to, you can go to Switch/ Devices by Connection in Device Manager. The USB device connected eg Elements, then shows up which makes it easy to uninstall, reboot pc which reinstalls ... hopefully with no issues. Worked for me on a specific Elements ext hd.

Just an update.
Curiosity enabled my brain to further research these ext hd/ssd usb disconnections. Automount was not enabled, accessed via cmd admin/diskpart/automount.
I checked this also on our other laptops, each had this enabled. I guess that somewhere in setting up my new R7 laptop this facility did not 'engage'.
