DIR syntax
How do I look for a file whose name contains "password" in the first 1 or 2 directory levels on my hard drive? I don't think "password" is the complete name. I assume I should use a DIR command but I no-longer remember the syntax needed!
Thanks,
Bill Wilson

Re: DIR syntax
Why can't you use the search box in Windows Explorer?
Select C: in the left hand pane and then in the search box above the right hand pane, type just 'pass' (no quotes).

Re: DIR syntax
Worth noting that there is an option to select to search within a file for the search term. You probably want to check that it is not selected if you want a quick result.

Re: DIR syntax
Hi Bill.
(1) You can display the syntax of the DIR command in a Command window by issuing
Code: Select all
Dir /?

Re: DIR syntax
Harold, I endorse Stuck's comments presented above.
To members of Eileen's Lounge I also suggest that they:-
(a) Join the Voidtools forums immediately. Voidtools forums use phpBB software, so there's no learning curve to Advanced Search and posting questions.
(b) Download and install the latest version of 1.5, rather than the official 1,4. Both versions are supported, but most expert users have moved to 1.5 several years ago. 1.5 is robust. I can't fault it, and 1.4 will be eclipsed by 1.5 Real Soon Now.
Cheers Chris
And thanks, Ken for responding. C.

Re: DIR syntax
I linked to the download page above. I just looked again at that link and I don't see a version 1.5. What am I missing, do I have to join VoidTools to get version 1.5?ChrisGreaves wrote: ↑25 Oct 2024, 21:07Harold, I endorse Stuck's comments presented above.

Yes, thank you. Not sure but I may have to join in order to get Chris's recommendation of version 1.5. I do like and often use Everything.

Re: DIR syntax
Harold, If you go to the Board Index and choose the Everything1.5 forum you will be taken through another link to this page.
Yes, it is confusing. Everything 1.4 is the current version - except 1.5 has been around for three or four years now and is stable.
Void receives about two suggestions per day and implements half of them overnight. I think that if people stopped requesting features 1.5 would have been the fully supported version years ago.
In any case, if you just explore the board, without joining, you'd see references to the 1.5 forum and hence the thread on 1.5 and hence the download page.
Just poke around a bit more.
If you use the SEARCH facility and look for "release" or "version" or similar, you'll come across a slew of posts about 1.5, where to download it, and so on.
I STILL recommend that members of Eileen's Lounge join VoidTools; it's a comfortable and comforting site ...
Cheers, Chris

Re: DIR syntax
I think it's been mentioned before, but the download page for 1.5 is Everything 1.5 Alpha
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: DIR syntax
Hans,
I guess I have just forgotten too much! I have messed around trying to get Everything and use it but have not been successful. I don't know if it has been installed in my account or not. Are there any details you can give me that might fix me up?
Thanks,
BillW

Re: DIR syntax
If you click the Start button or press the Windows key and type everything, does the application come up in the search results?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: DIR syntax
Hans,
Yes! I get a huge amount of stuff! It looks like it might be a listing of every file that has ever existed on my hard drive!
Years ago I used a very powerful application for saving all the passwords (I can't remember its name now!) After a few years it started charging a fee for using it so I switched a simpler program for remembering passwords that was free. I think the name of that program included the word "password" but I don't remember its complete name either!
I know I am a cheapskate but I don't want to pay a monthly fee for remembering my passwords!
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
BillW

Re: DIR syntax
Hi Bill.
If the file is ON your computer, then regardless of its name, VoidTools's "Everything 1.5" will find it.
Cheers, Chris

Re: DIR syntax
Well unfortunately those two password managers now charge too. Or, at least they require a credit card when you sign up. I have decided to keep my passwords off-line in some way I will think up.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Make sure that you look at their personal plans. For example, Bitwarden:
