ShortCut Icons on Desktop [tablet]

Can anyone think of a reason why windows 10 should change the icon of one of my desktop icons? If I look under properties it shows the correct icon amongst the alternatives but when I select it I get an icon that isn't even listed. I can only think that the old icon is somehow stuck in W10 memory but logging out didn't fix it. The icon is fine if I make a shortcut in the folder holding the program but as soon as I drag it to the desktop it changes. Quite annoying. Any ideas for a cure. Thanks.

Have you tried clearing your icon cache file? See How to Rebuild the Icon Cache in Windows 10 for instructions.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't, I did and it didn't work. Tried several times with several reboots. Even deleted the shortcut and made a fresh one after rebooting - still the old icon returned. I am really unimpressed with Windows 10.

Have you tried SFC /SCANNOW?
