Windows 10 FAQ

Post by John Gray »

As a result of yesterday's two-hour Windows 10 - the Next Chapter 'announcement', a Windows 10 FAQ has appeared, which answers many of the questions chaps have been asking!

From the Windows 10 FAQ (Wiki):
How much will Windows 10?
That's the question!

It will change your whole life to a colourful panorama of computing wonderfulness! :fanfare:

Just like Windows 8 did, but even more betterer, if this is possible!

I guess it will, John. But I'm not using Windows 8. I don't know if I can handle all the wonderfulness if upgrading directly to 10. Good that we'll have 1.5 year or so to prepare ourselves.

This signals the end of stable platforms for developers, right?

There must have been for those working on equine software.

As in the news report: "The horse was said to be in a stable condition."

Well, yes. Every version of DOS (PC-, MS-, IBM etc) and certainly early versions of Windows (3.1, FWG, even XP).
You purchased disk(s), installed, and it was the same platform as last month's installation.
Today I am not allowed to run most shareware without
(a) Firefox and Flashplayer nagging me to upgrade
(b) Image Resizer spending half a minute to work out that i don't have an internet connection and that it can't call home
(c) Sundry other software that I enjoy for free (!) figuring out that even without an internet connection it is at least 168 hours since it last Called Home, so it must be out of date and vulnerable to something.

At least with my two boxes of punched cards in my briefcase I knew that the FORTRAN II compiler I used last night was the samed one I could user tonight ... :grumble:

Agree. Even if I uncheck "Check for updates", if that option exist, and/or block outgoing traffic (for the software) in the firewall, some software just has to sit there spinning their little wheel for 10-15-30 seconds trying to call home.

Hmmm, don't know why. I just tried it again and it worked OK?

It seems somewhat inconsistent. The first time I clicked Bob's link I got "Sorry, we can't find the page". The secomd time, it worked OK...

Hans

That is strange. I use Firefox and it took about a dozen tries before the page loaded, and then only after I found it using search on the "Sorry, we can't find the page" page. Now it works all the time.

Paul
