Copha in the UK?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

In conversation while out fine-dining last Thursday night I mentioned Copha.
"What that?" from my colleague in Fish-and-Chips.

I said it was used in making chocolate, and recalled my Lancashire mother's 1956 delight in arriving in Australia to find she could by copha; banned in the UK, apparently, after lobbying from chocolate makers.

Question: Is the ban still in place?
Auxiliary question: Is anyone reading this thread actually purchasing and using Copha?
Secondary Auxiliary question: If so, what for.

That brand is not available in The Netherlands, but you can get coconut fat in some wholefood shops and Asian food shops.

Among others, it's used as an alternative to hair gel, and to wax cars.
Best wishes,
Hans

Not that I've ever made them, but the quintessential Australian child's party food Chocolate Crackles (http://www.kellogg.com.au/tabid/152/Default.aspx) uses copha.

Not for me, though.

.. which, from fading meory, is probably where my mother got her Copha-awakening.
Chocolate Crackles would have been served at every get-together at the time of our arrival - June and hence "cool enough for chocolate crackles".
Knowing my mother she would have complemented the cook and asked for the recipe.
At every event.
And learned that she could buy Copha in Australia!
