Brother HL-2270DW Wireless Printer

Post by BobH »

This printer is driving me up the wall. I think the problem is a network problem, which is why I'm posting in this forum.

I have had this printer for several years and used it often. Of late, I cannot seem to keep it up and running. I've searched online and followed various suggestions, all to no avail.

I'm running Windows 11 Pro and my wifi network is driven by a T-Mobile cellular receiver/router. It works great for the various PCs, iPads, iPhones, TVs, etc. that we access the Internet with; but I have had recurring problems keeping the Brother HL-2270DW working on the network. I've tried removing the printer and reinstalling it. That works up to a point then Win 11 Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers and Scanners shows the printer but says "Driver is unavailable." per the screenshot.

I've downloaded the driver but cannot figure out how to install it. I can uncompress it, but then nothing seems to happen. I've also downloaded the entire Brother software package and been though its installation process without success.

I fear that I have done this so many times that I'm missing some cue that will tell me how to get out of this failure loop I seem to be in. What puzzles me so badly is that I've had the printer working, then for unknown reasons it is no longer in the network or the driver won't install.

Can anyone, please, give me a kick in the pants and help me sort this out.

UPDATE:
I forgot to mention when I use the controls on the printer itself to reset it, it prints the configuration page that it is supposed to print.

If you RIGHT click on the driver you've downloaded, is there an option to install on the context menu that appears?

Have you tried using the Firmware Update Tool from here:

Thanks for the suggestion, Ken.

I have downloaded all of the files from Brother for this printer, and I've attempted to install all updates; but the process fails because the printer is not connected to the network; hence the post in this forum.

I've read several articles online and tried the steps in the Quick Set-up Guide that tell how to reset the device to factory defaults.

I think I'm standing too close to the issue and cannot 'see' the problem objectively. :hairout:

I've been on the phone with both T-Mobile and Brother without resolving the problem; however, I have tried a different path to make it happen. Before, I tried to make all connections wirelessly. After speaking with Brother, I learned that it is necessary to connect the printer to the router with an ethernet cable. I've done that and followed the instructions - carefully - only to reach the same impass , to wit, the network sees no printer:
Brother No network printer disable firewall.png
As you can see, the message says to disable any personal firewall if no printer appears in the list. The only security that I run is Microsoft Security Essentials in Windows 11 Pro. When I search, I find reference to Windows Defender. Is this the same thing as MSE? If so, can I safely disable it? Information I've found says that if temporarily disabled, it will be re-establish (reinstalled) on rebooting.

I followed instructions from Microsoft support that told me how to Windows Virus and Threat threat protection > Real Time Protections off. I did so, hit the Brother software refresh button, saw it scan the system and still no printer shows in the list.

Anyone?

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

Why is it searching for wireless devices when the printer has a wired connection!?

Thank you, Jolas.

I have been through that procedure several times but I will do it again. Can't hurt can it?

Stuart, the printer is a wireless printer and has worked as one for years. Something unknown has happened recently that has made it unavailable to the wifi network. Recovery instructions from Brother say to connect the printer with an Ethernet cable to the router in order to fix the problem; otherwise it is not a cable-connected printer and will return to the wireless functioning state when fully recovered.
