Static IP Address

Post by BobH »

As reported here in an earlier post, this HP mini desktop keeps dropping its connection to my Brother wireless printer. The solution suggested was to change the IP address from dynamic to static. I've struggled to learn how to do this.

I followed a How-to-Geek article and changed the Settings > Network and Internet > Properties > IP Assignment to Manual for IpV4.

I don't know if this fixed the problem. Is there a way to tell (other than by waiting to see if the printer drops out after the next reboot)?

This seems to be a network-wide solution. Is that the case? If so, have I done any harm?

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

This is normally a setting on your router. My Linksys router uses the term "Reserved IP address" for this. My printer has a reserved IP address on the home network, and every time it restarts and asks the router for the address to use, it is given the same address.

Like Stuart, my printer is assigned a fixed IP address via a setting in my Netgear router, not via something in Windows.

Thank you, Gentlemen.

I have a T-Mobile cellular device. I'll have to look into how to address it and change variables.
