It seems that to use Outlook 2010 to search for Stuff in messages, it is necessary to install Windows Search 4.0 on our XP boxes.
I would like to have it operate in the background, as much as is possible.
Consequently I have deactivated the "Windows Search Deskbar" from the Toolbars list, but am left with the small icon of a pale blue magnifying glass in the bottom right Notification Area.
Is there any way I can remove this icon, but still leave Windows Search 4.0 operating in the background? (I suspect that clicking on its menu item 'Exit', which removes the icon, will also shut down Search until the next reboot).
Tthanks!

If I interpret the replies from Microsoft employees in How to hide windows desktop search system tray icon correctly, it is not possible to remove the notification area icon.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, Hans - I didn't come across that thread in my searches! So, in a word, No...
