unexpected sighting

Post by stuck »

This afternoon we did a short amble that we've done many times, around the perimeter of Beningbrough Hall. It passes the confluence of the River Nidd with the River Ouse. At that point there is an information board about the location being a stronghold for the rare Tansy beetle. Needless to say we've never seen any tansy beetles - until today!

It appears these endangered beetles are working hard to get themselves off the endangered list.

And they're being encouraged in other ways

They are getting a bit of help from local scientists, who have established a new habitat elsewhere in York with a view to relocating some of the beetles to that new location.

Yes, it's not far from the railway station

What lovely coloured creatures.

Good photo Ken. Did you use a macro lens?

Graeme

Not really. In fact I didn't even use my DSLR. As I said, we've done this walk many, many, times so this time I didn't lug my heavy DSLR, I just picked up a simple point-and-shoot. In full auto-mode it switches to a pseudo macro setting when you go in close. I then went in closer by cropping the image.

If you're cropping beetles, you're getting into the area of edible insects.

Not me personally but others are already in that area.
