Home is what, and where you make it.

Post by DocAElstein »

I saw the nest a few days ago. It looked abandoned, although there were some small eggs in it. I assumed the Bird had long since forgotten about it.
An unusual place, messy and not far from the street, but I guess Home is what and where you make it.
I only noticed it was, in fact in use, as I got near the nest today, and the Bird almost took my right ear off as it dashed past me and into the nest!
I got quite close for one Photo – it did not seem to worry the Bird.

I guess maybe the passing traffic helps offset the boredom of sitting at Home all day without much to do, :)

Sure. I am working near it fortunately so I can keep my eye on them.
They do have a Father helping out, so that’s good news.
But that was a close thing. - She sat there all alone for a week, and as far as I can tell bore them alone. After the births I noticed a larger black Bird lurking around a lot. I felt like protecting the sweet grey thing in such a vulnerable situation and chased it off a few times.
Later I noticed it bringing food for the kids. I can’t get a good pic as he doesn’t hang about when he sees me

He still comes around, but makes a rapid retreats if I come to close.
The mother and I are good friends, she never moves when I get close.
She just got back from getting some food for the kids.

I think they are some sort of Argonaut Vampire related species.
At Dusk yesterday I noticed they were developing long tentacles with a Jaw type thing on the end that opens if you get too close. https://i.postimg.cc/xd9JZF93/Worms-Please.jpg

This morning they are sleeping and seem to be quite rapidly developing some sort of Bird-like outer camouflage. https://i.postimg.cc/pXnF5F0z/Develo-ping-Camoflage.jpg

I still think it could be an Alien. It has interesting abilities. It disguises itself as a sweat small grey thing most of the time, but when the kids try hard to get out, it opens its mouth and sucks in air continually until it bloats out like a balloon trapping the kid’s heads against the nest wall…..

It’s interesting that they make no attempt to get out of the nest when mum pops out. Almost like human animal like rebellious teenager syndrome, rebelling only when they have someone to upset and rebel against.

These Aliens grow much quicker than us Humans. The one looking threatening at me in the next pic is not the Mother . it’s the biggest of the kids https://i.postimg.cc/BZwrWHfm/Eldest-Sister-Alien.jpg

The parents spend the whole day feeding them, collecting most of the food from the neighbour just across the road. He is very active in his large garden this time of year, also has a pond, so I expect the continual disturbance and watering makes for good worm finding potential.
I am rather concerned by the peculiar practice the parents have of crossing the road. .... Of course, they posses the ability to fly. So why do they always swoop down very low and cross the road at low level, often almost touching the road , dodging traffic, before rapidly rising to normal cruising height when they reach the other side? - Very peculiar. I wonder if they see the traffic as low flying aircraft and try to fly under them??
(This is not an uncommon event, and maybe some local climatic wind effects influence the seemingly strange behaviour. Early one morning a couple of years back I experienced the same behaviour with a large black pair of birds. There was not much traffic, but unfortunately at the right ( or wrong ) moment a fast car sped past… There was that horrible sounding muffled thud…. I did not need to look to see what happened.... I went looking for my shovel..… :( )

You’re right, and one kid is smart and has just found himself a nice new comfortable Perch, just outside the nest at the back ….

And then, this morning, there was just one…. https://i.postimg.cc/j2RjRVJr/and-then- ... st-one.jpg
and-then-there-was-just-one 11.jpg
I assume all went well with his Brothers and Sisters.
Later I saw the last one take the plunge… he flew like a brick, then dragged himself into the shelter of my Bike shed.

There he sat for an hour
A while later I heard and saw a lot of frantic sound and behaviour by his parents near the Bike shed, which I deliberately kept my distance from.

Its all silent now, no Birds in site, so I assume the story have its happy ending. :)

Maybe its normal, I never looked into these things, but , yes, I certainly was very shocked how quickly they grew. The parents were very active in the last week, there were periods early in the morning when they delivered a vast amount of worms..
