Carrier deck controllers - ballet

Post by ChrisGreaves »

This YouTube video segment is typical of many, showing the stylized ballet of controllers on the flight deck.
I can work out some of the signals, but would appreciate knowing where I might find a (web-based for preference) authoritative source of meanings for the signals, specifically the arm/hand positions, the arm/hand motions, the body postures and so on.
It is fascinating to watch this form of communication when so much is riding on error-free interpretation.

Hi Chris

Scroll down to Chapter 10, there are 16 pages (about 4 on each page) of the hand signals used on aircraft carriers, whether these differ for commercial flights I don't know.

Chris,
Just like at Heathrow - lots of people standing around 'supervising', a couple actually doing some 'work', all for a single seat aircraft.

Slightly off-topic, but why is No. 22 wearing camouflage trousers. Seems pointless on a mono-crome ship.
