Headscratcher of the week

If you are interested this weeks puzzle is as follows:-

Think of a French word that everyone knows. Add a "v" to the beginning and an"e" to the end of that word and the result will be the English language equivalent of that word.

It's all very well you lot rabbiting away in some foreign lingo - but I still don't know the answer! :-)
The nearest I can get is v-vin-e!
