I have a system here that has a Viewsonic VG730m monitor, but it is listed as a Generic non-plug n play monitor in the device manager. I have uninstalled the generic driver, but on restart it comes back.
We noticed this issue because the desk background stop rotating between images, on this Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium machine.
Also on right clicking, one does not get "Next desktop background, Graphic Properties, or Graphic Options"?

Re: non-plug n play monitor
You probably need to configure (and possibly update the driver for) your video card - that's what determines the graphic properties and graphic options. Your monitor should work happily with the generic Windows 7 driver.
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: non-plug n play monitor
Just updated the graphic card driver and got some of it back. But the "Next desktop background" is still missing, and the slide show background is NOT working.

Re: non-plug n play monitor
That's probably a Windows 7 setting, not a video setting.
Click Start > Control Panel > (All Control Panel Items if necessary) > Power Options.
Click Change Plan Settings for the selected power plan.
Click Change Advanced Power Settings.
Expand Desktop Background Settings.
Make sure that Slideshow is Available.

I have checked that, and yes, it is set as "Available".

Re: non-plug n play monitor
Now we are getting "Display drivers stopped and has been recovered". Then the BSOD and a restart with a not shut down properly screen. We continue the restart with the selection of Normal restart. We have had about 6 of these this morning.
System says it is a G35 Express chipset. I think this means it is the on motherboard graphics card!

Yes, it looks like graphics are integrated on the motherboard, and it looks like it's acting up! Is the machine still under warranty?
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: non-plug n play monitor
Did a uninstall of the Graphic driver and on reboot let the machine find the graphic device, reset the res to a readable range.
All seems to be OK.
But the background slide show is not working yet.
No BSOD for nearly 18 hours.
No, the Warranty is up.

Re: non-plug n play monitor
Had to add a graphics card as the onboard was acting up. The tech shop said that it is a known issue with some of the earlier onboard graphics devices and Windows 7.
The new card and a clean install of Windows 7 cleared things up.
Machine is still under warranty, so the card and labor was no cost fix.
