CMOS Battery low

Post by geecee »

I don't know if this is the right place for this question but if it isn't I'm sure someone will let me know.

I have recently started getting a message when I switch on my computer - CMOS Battery low. Press F2 to continue.

Each time this happens the date and time reset to 11.47pm on 10 April 2007. What is the CMOS Battery and how can this problem be fixed?

As you can see from the question, I am not technically computer savvy.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks.
George

If you ahve a desktop PC the CMOS battery is on the motherboard. It is a silver disc about 1.5cm across. (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=cmos+battery" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

If you're happy about opening the case then it is easily replaced.

If you've a laptop, I'm afraid you're on your own.

Thanks John for your information. Much obliged but I think I'll get someone with a little more knowledge to replace the battery.

Thanks Hans for putting me right re where the query should have been posted.

Replacing that battery is a snap geecee.

Find you an older teenage geek or a 20-something one and put them to work whilst you peer over his/her shoulder. Once you see how easy it is to get to the guts and do your business, you will be much more self-confident and prepared for the next foray. Pretty soon you'll be building your own system from purchased components.

Have a look at one of the myriad "how to do it" Youtube videos, such as this one.
The CMOS lithium battery is usually CR2032-type.

You'll undoubtedly have to change the system date and time when you've changed the battery, but I can't remember ever having to change any of the other BIOS settings on (Dell Optiplexes, at least).
(Your mileage will undoubtedly vary...)
