In Australia those were called comptometers. When I started my accounting career in the early (and sexist) 70's, we hired comptometer operators (all female) to do general ledger additions and large ledger additions from manual/paper records (such as a clothing store with thousands of hand-maintained debt and lay-away records). Since all the keying work was done for us, I didn't learn to 10-key, and when I moved to the US with my public accounting firm I was rebuked for my lack of skill, and advised to learn ASAP! I'm still terrible at 10 key and QWERTY keyboard. :sigh:

Hey Big Al!

I used one of those back in the '50s to extend invoices in a building supply firm I worked in as a clerk. Later, when I was at university and taking statistics, I had people claim I had cheated on homework exercises because I used it to do problems.
