change a default pdf reader

Post by tomyrush »

Somehow Foxt's PDF reader became my default pdf reader, I want to change to the Nuance PDF reader as the default, but have run into a problem.

Normally I go to contol panel and the folders to change a default program, but my folders entry in Ctl Panel does not have a "pdf" file type.

Not sure how the file association gets handled with a pdf reader.

Any ideas appreciated.

Try the following:
- Start Foxit Reader.
- Activate the Help menu and make sure that "Set to Default PDF Reader" is NOT ticked.
- Quit Foxit Reader.
- Locate any .PDF file in Windows Explorer.
- Right-click it and select Open With | Choose Program... from the popup menu.
- Choose the Nuance program (click Browse... if necessary).
- Tick the check box "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file", then click OK.

See How to change or select which program starts when you double-click a file in Windows XP for more info.
Best wishes,
Hans

I think I have it working now - the icons on several pdf files on my desktop, still show Foxits icon, but I seem to consistently go to Nuance.
Thanks

Rebooting may solve the incorrect icon problem. If not, you can use the free utility TweakUI XP (download from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP):
Click "Repair".
Select "Rebuild Icons" from the dropdown.
Click "Repair Now", then click "OK".
Best wishes,
Hans
