Anyone who uses a VPN should carry out a few basic checks to be sure that it's sufficiently secure.
I currently use MullvadVPN, which stores NO data about me at all. My username is a long number. I pay for the service by sending cash in an envelope!

Last time I sent cash in an envelope it got nicked
I am assuming that scans that are made these days can identify cash and other valuables but I obviously have no idea when, where or by whom it was stolen. But its all bank transfers now ... what is cash

If you gave me your account number then I could John, but I could also then use your account.
Actually that's not 100% true, as they generate a one-off hash code for each payment and that is the number that goes in the envelope, so that the person in their office who credits the account doesn't know which account it is for!
