Is there any alternative to Adobe Flash Player?

As I understand it, the flash player is needed because of Java used in web pages and that Java is proprietary to Adobe; ergo no competitor product would ever be allowed. Am I close?

Given the seemingly perennial advice that FP has a serious security breach, it would be nice if there were an alternative.

Java is owned by Oracle, not by Adobe, and there is no relation between Java used in web pages (which has become rare nowadays) and Flash Player.

Flash Player is used to display videos and interactive content such as games that can be played in the browser. For video, some websites offer an alternative - YouTube videos can now be displayed in Flash Player and in HTML5. But for most Flash content, there is no alternative.

Hans
