Looking for a CD-burner.

Post by ChrisGreaves »

It is time to burn some music MP3 files to CD disks, suitable for playing in the car's CD player on looooong trips.
I suspect I can just drag files to the CD drive, but over the years I've been plagued with "You have files waiting to be burned" which (message) seems to last until the next version of Windows is installed.

Some five years ago I used a neat little program that showed green/orange/red on a status bar as the accumulated file size reached the 700MB threshhold. That'd be nice, although I plan to be organised this time and accumulate files in batches of about 700MB size, the batch being under (my own) program control.

Please and thank you: What software do you happily use for CD burning?

P.S. I should add that I searched this forum without much success.

Look no further than:

NB don't be fooled by the name, it's not XP specific. I use it and it's had many mentions here in The Lounge

Howdy, Chris!

I no longer burn CDs for music on trips but rely on thumb drives or micro cards. The data density is (generally) higher and the size of the media smaller and less subject to damage. Of course, this option only applies if you have car radio with a USB port and/or micro card slot.

While I haven't shopped lately for an aftermarket car radio, there were many reasonably priced ones available with USB and iPhone ports some few years ago when I last looked.

FWIW (and I have no financial interest or any other in this vendor) I have had good luck buying from Crutchfield. Check to see if they ship to Ross-ville :flee: before buying.

I wish!
I was looking for thumb-drive radios (bed side and car) five years back, with no success.
Ms B's car has only a CD layer, but if she doesn't lose too much cash in the Zuiderdam casino she might trade in her old car in the new year to one with a thumb-drive radio,
I'll do what I can ...

Ken, thanks for this link, also for the links in the forum.
I'll install it tonight and see how it goes.

Ken, thanks again.
I finally got around to burning this afternoon.
Works like a charm; about 8 mins per CD, yielding close to 75 minutes per disc, as far as I can tell.

But see also DETERMINE the duration of an MP3 audio file

And then a month later, doesn't work!
I'm still using version 4.5.2.4291
Comes up with a message "none of the tracks could be added to the audio image"
This thread on the CDBurnerXP Forum mentioned CD sizes.

I had been experimenting by dragging MP3 files to the list, reading the "too big" message, removing files and trying again.
The thread suggests that a 3rd-party software is setting a switch that CDXPBurner won't forget, so I rebooted ( :clapping: ) and tried dragging only a half-dozen MP3s, well below the 80-minute limit.
Appeared to work again.

SO!
Then I came here to search for the thread about CD Burning to report my findings and found MY OWN POST about spanning disks.
I'd forgotten that!
Thanks to Eileen's Lounge for remembering what I'd forgotten I'd discovered.

So, I loaded the CDBurner XP again, and couldn`t find the spanning-disks option.

Turns out it is a feature for DATA files, not Audio files.

I think you owe this guy called "Chris" a chocolate or something!
He seems to have been quite helpful in resolving your issues for you.
