The IN box shows it contains 63 emails but there are only 18, any suggestions why the discrepancy please.

Could there be a filter on your Inbox, for example only recently received emails?
To check, select View > Current View > Customize Current View..., then click Filter...
To check, select View > Current View > Customize Current View..., then click Filter...

Followed instructions and now understand that the the number 63 related to the number of emails received in the last 7 days so, many thanks for enlightening me Hans, wishing you, the moderators and all members a happy & prosperous new year.
