Text Overflow

Post by Don Wells »

I am running FF 4.0 which has a symptom not seen in previous versions. Unfortunately the example I have comes from a secure site.

Can anyone suggest whether there is a problem with settings on my installation; the source code for the page; or Mozilla Firefox source code?

Don,
Is this the only site that you see this problem?
If it's the only one, I would think it is the site, not FF.
If there were another, we could try it to see if the effects are the same.

I've seen this before. Usually 'cured' by viewing in IE, or enabling scripting I had inadvertently blocked in FF.
In cases of the former, I've always assumed it is some incompatibility between the source code and FF, but if due to incompetent coding or biased web-authoring software, I haven't a clue!

Thanks Viking
I've seen it before, but cannot recall if it was the same site or not.

Thanks Lief

The problem does not appear in either IE or Chrome. Scripting is enabled in FF. The site professes compatibility with FF 1.5 and above. I have advised the site owner of the problem, but I suspect that they have other fish to fry.

I have come across customers who have noted odd rendering/layout problems with the company web site. Usually the problem is that they are using a version of IE that is less than std compliant but more recently Google Chrome has displayed things in unexpected ways. The way Javascript is interpreted by different browsers tends to be at the bottom of the issues I've seen and a bit of work by our developers will often fix it.

There are a few changes in Firefox 4 compared with Firefox 3.6. One is the new HTML5 parser. To see whether this part of Firefox is the problem, you can turn that parser on and off using the about:config preferences editor. I am running version 3.6 on this computer, so I can't verify the following will work:

Open a new tab, type about:config in the location bar and press Enter.
In the filter box, type html and wait for the list to filter.
Double-click html5.parser.enable to toggle it to false.
Reload the problem tab and see whether it helps.

Thanks for the insight Jefferson.

Setting html5.parser.enable to false did not affect the display, so I have reset it to True. :thankyou:

I saw this in older FF versions and also version 4.
On my WindowsXP machine it occurs if one sets a minimum font size... Tools | Options | Content (tab) | Default font (advanced button).

Thank you Jim
I failed to mention that I am indeed running XP. You Sir, hit the nail on the head and cured my problem.

Does it matter what size you choose? My minimum is set to 10 and I don't think I've seen that kind of overlap.

The dividing line seems to be around a 14 point font on my monitor.
It has 2560 by 1440 screen resolution with a 120 DPI font setting.
I keep the minimum font size set at 17 and suffer the occasional font overflow.

You can quickly determine the min acceptable by finding an offending website and adjusting the min font size up and down.
Changing the min font size won't screw up FF.
I see today that: http://www.nationalreview.com/ has put up a 'send me money' message that overlaps.

It sounds as though all the work put into the Zoom feature has not made its way back to the minimum font size feature (in other words, the page is not rescaled accordingly). Perhaps a better solution for you would be to use one of the add-ons that lets you globally zoom all sites (and tweak individual sites as you go)? I haven't tried these myself:

Default FullZoom Level

Thanks for research/recommendation. I just installed NoSquint and so far it is an improvement.
It comes with excellent instructions that automatically appear as a separate web page.
It also includes a StatusBar, so I have disabled the "Status-4-Evar" add on I had installed.
(both status bars appear to be the same except that NoSquint provides the page % in the right corner)

If I continue with NoSquint, I will probably make a donation to them.
