I dodn't meant the formatting of the columns in the Access query, but whether the parameters had been declared explicitly. In Access 2003 this is done by selecting Query | Parameters... and in Access 2007/2010 by clicking the Parameters button on the Design tab of the ribbon while the query is open in design view.

No I hadn't but now I have. It didn't make any difference at first and just the headers appeared again. I closed the excel sheet and re-opened it as many changes had been done, saved the changes, still no difference.
I removed the two dates from A2 and A3 and re-entered them, hey presto it works !!!!!!!!
The dates were entered exactly as before and typo was checked prior to deleting...........
