Hello. PowerPoint 2010.
The option on the Format contextual menu to Remove Background is greyed out. Does this only apply to certain image types? If so, which?

That tells me how to use the feature but not why it's greyed. However, it seems to work for jpegs. Perhaps there are other files it can work with as well?
