I learn something every day!
I have a Word2003 document of 30 pages with 4 footnotes scattered through those pages.
I select the last 4 pages and Copy/Paste to a new document (in Word2003, but destined for Thunderbird email)
To my delight Word2003 copies only the footnotes referenced in the last 4 pages, which means that my target audience can read the 4 pages with footnotes correctly renumbered, and without the distraction of earlier footnotes ("What is he talking about?!!???")
I am impressed.
Cheers, Chris
