differing page number types
I would like to create a document with page numbers, but the first 8 pages of the document I'd like to be in numerals i, ii, iii, etc. And after viii the page numberings start from 1 onto 2, 3, 4, etc. as usual. How can I set up my document to achieve this?

Click anywhere on page 1.
Double-click the page header or footer where you want the page number.
Using the tab key. position the insertion point where you want the page number.
On the Header and Footer' tab of the ribbon, click Page Number > Current Position > Plain Number.
Then click Page Number > Format Page Numbers...
Select i, ii, iii, ... and click OK.
Double-click in the body of the document.
Click at the end of page 8.
On the Layout tab of the ribbon, click Breaks and select 'Next Page' under 'Section Breaks'.
You're now on page 9.
Double-click the page header or footer, as appropriate.
You should see ix as page number.
Select Page Number > Format Page Numbers... in the 'Header and Footer' tab of the ribbon.
Select 1, 2, 3...
Under 'Page numbering', select 'Start at' instead of 'Continue from previous section'. You should see 1 in the box.
Click OK.

Re: differing page number types
Hi Hans, sorry - I forgot I'd need to add a cover page and a contents page so this has affected things now.
Using your instructions, I've added the sections breaks but now I can't get rid of the two numbers i and ii for the front cover page (first page) and contents page (second page) because if I do it affects my breaks for the next sections. How can I delete the numbering for the first two pages (i and ii) without affecting my next sections? Sorry I've gotten into a mess with it!
To clarify, I had added an additional 2 pages so now it goes:
First page - cover page (page numbering: i)
second page - contents page (page numbering: ii)
third page (page numbering i)
fourth page (page numbering ii)
... and so on until the 10th page which is page viii
After the 10th page I managed to get the numbering with the 1, 2, 3, after page viii as per your instructions; it's just by adding the first two additional pages since that I've messed up and I don't know how to fix without affecting the subsequent numbering - any ideas? Is there a way to delete the first two page numbers i and ii (not required) without affecting the rest?

Re: differing page number types
Each time you want to change the page numbering, insert a section break, and de-select the Link to Previous button.
You should then be able to specify the page numbering (or absence thereof) for each section individually.
