Getting 2 lots of Outlook 2010 starting at re-boot

Post by Peter Kinross »

I am Getting 2 lots of Outlook 2010 starting at re-boot.
Only 1 is in Startup, no idea where the other is coming from.

Is Outlook still open when you shut down/restart Windows?
Best wishes,
Hans

What happens if you close down Outlook before rebooting Windows?

I always close everything before re-booting.
Somewhere there is a Win 10 thingy, apart from Startup, that is getting another instance going.

Here are two utilities to check what is started automatically:

A simple one: WhatInStartup by Nir Sofer.
An advanced one: AutoRuns from Microsoft.

Both are free.

Apart from that: recent versions of Windows 10 by default reload applications that were active when you shut down/rebooted, but you mentioned that you close everything.
Best wishes,
Hans

I already had AutoRuns. Didn't think of checking it.
No dice, nothing there. Boy there is a LOT. EG 141 items coming from the Roxio folder. that can't be right!
Just discovered that when I searched for Outlook in ARs, I used wild cards - *outlook* and it came up with nothing. I just tried it without wildcards and there are some entries. 1 looks like it is the correct startup item, no clue as to what the others do.

Go figure!
I disabled the Outlook startup item in ARs.
Re-booted and only 1 instance of Outlook.
Danged if I know where that is coming from.
I checked Task Scheduler, but nothing there.

I'm afraid I don't know!

You might try the following; if it doesn't help you can restore the original setting:
- In Windows, select Start > Settings.
- Select Accounts, then click 'Sign-in options' in the left-hand pane.
- Scroll down the right-hand pane, then set 'Use my sign-in to automatically finish setting up my device and reopen my apps after an update or restart' to Off.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Hans.
I Hate (capital 'H') using log ins on my home computer. I have it set to log in automatically.
So I guess that that suggestion is not for me.

Immediately before you re-boot and after you shutdown Outlook, use Task Manager and check to see if Outlook.exe is still running. Sometimes the Outlook UI stops but the main program gets stuck. If it is there use Task Manager to end the task and then re-boot.

Also, are you running Autoruns as Administrator?

I've got it running at boot, so I think I will leave it at that, even though it now does not appear in the startup list.
Yep, I did run ARs as administrator.
But thanks anyway Joe - really appreciated.
