how to close when the "Start" tab is unresponsive.

Post by Dave Davison »

My brother has just phoned to say when he hits the "Star" key on his laptop (running windows 7) to close down nothing happens. Short of unplugging at the mains which I know is not expedient, what other alternative has he got please? Thanks Dave.

I hope you mean the "Windows" key or as some refer to it as the "Start" key.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then in the lower right corner there is a shut down icon.

If necessary keep pressing Alt-F4 to close whichever application(s) are active. Andy.

If nothing else works: press and hold down the Power button (the one you normally use to turn on the computer) until the computer shuts itself down.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks for every response....(first off I should have read my post more thoroughly and noticed the spelling mistake - Star instead of "START" SORRY) Will introduce my brother to the Lounge next time I get to see him and suggest he subscribe so he can tap into the wealth of information available here. Talking to him on the phone I suggested he hit the Ctrl + Alt+ Del together but he claimed it did not bring up the "Windows Task Manager" so will have to see how his laptop responds next time I see him.
