Disable Windows7 Live Mail?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I'd like to not-see Live Mail when I click on an email link, but am not sure what I can/should uninstall.

In WinXp clicking on an email link (e.g. in newspaper page) would launch my preferred email client (Mozilla Thunderbird). Now I get launched into Windows Live mail. I'd rather stick with Thunderbird so that I have a complete archive of all sent mails in one place.

Revo Uninstaller doesn't show "Live Mail" as such:-

Control Panel ditto:-

This http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938275 kb article says (for Windiows Vista) "b. In the list of programs, select the name of the desired Windows Live Service that you want to remove, and then click Uninstall." But I'm not sure which of the Windows Live I see contains Windows Live Mail.

My archives thank you in advance!

What is set as your default mail application? Control Panel | Programs | Default Programs | Set your default programs.

Is this checked?

Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Live Essentials so you can run the uninstaller for Essentials and choose the components you wish to remove.

I agree with Hey Jude, just uninstall it.

By the way, it is NOT part of Windows 7, it is just that the OEM of your machine install all of the "Windows Live Essentials" products when the machine was built.

Windows Live Essentials will run on XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Note: the latest version of Windows Live Essentials, WLE 2011, will not run on XP. See Windows Live Essentials 2011 system requirements.

Thanks Joe. This is a part of Control panel I had not yet explored.

I changed the circled checkbox to ON and now Thunderbird loads, so that fixed my immediate problem.
I see other solutions below, including that this is not part of Win7, so for the sake of future readers I shall work my way through each of those solutions too.

Thanks Bob.
I dunno.
I'm still in TB 1.5.0.4.

I was about to upgrade last December (on account of another question I had a month or two back) when my laptop died. Perhaps this evening will be a good time to do that. :surrender:

(2 hours later) I d/l and Installed 3.1.7 but it wouldn't run (Uninstall, reboot, re-install etc). I'm now at 3.0.2. let's see what happens.

Thanks DaveA

Can I safely RevoUninstall the two remaining "Windows Live" doo-hickeys? (I see Joe's comment that followed your post)

Remember, Win 7 didn't come with a pre-installed mail program. I installed Live Essentials but hated alot of the extras so I uninstalled most of it, and use TB instead.

I'm just the opposite. I was not impressed by TB, and use WLM instead. I am really beginning to like it. I guess it all depends on what you are brought up on. I started with OE, then Windows Mail, now WLM and very much like the improvements, but you know that's why these things are called Personal Computers because we can personalize them to our likes.
Have a Great Day!

That's only because TB 1.5.0.4 doesn't come with a calendar
