I was able to exclude all butOutlook from the list.
I'll run for half a day and see if things improve.
A new career in vermicomposting seems more appealing by the day ...

... over the past 3 days Windows Explorer (6.1 Build 7600) has been depressingly slow.

(1 week later)
This morning my mouse-hover showed a status message Stop loading "BatLAP", where BATLap is the name of the folder I was opening. The large arrow shows the progress bar and the small arrow shows the popup message. I have truncated the screenshot to fit.

A Google Search turned up this thread and I was working my way through the responses when I came to the text "Right click on a directory that's normally slow to load and select properties. On the customize tab, make sure Optimize this folder for: is set to "General Items." If it isn't, select general items and also apply to all subfolders.".
I have implemented this and for the past 5 minutes the sluggishness has abated.

I'm going to run with this for the rest of the day (typing with my fingers crossed)

Wait until you've used Win7 64-bit for a while; you'll type with your fingers crossed, too.
