Desktop Icons

Post by viking33 »

Don't know how or why but suddenly some of my desktop icons are displaying a strange "double icon?"
My original icons have this other one plastered over the top of them?

Can't seem to change them even with the change icon option.

This is one of them:

I have to add that it looks like this is only happening on desktop shortcuts, not desktop folders

Try the following:
- In Windows Explorer, make sure that you display hidden files and folders.
- Go to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local.
- Delete the file IconCache.db.
- Restart Windows.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks, Hans.
Sorry to say, that didn't work though.

Your screenshot shows a non-standard icon for the Downloads folder (as far as I can tell) - have you installed an alternative theme?
Best wishes,
Hans

Not an alternative Theme but I HAVE changed some icons on the desktop, using the usual R\C properties | change icon route. I do note that the "downloads" icon has lost that strange front display and now has the DownArrow icon displaying as usual. There are now 3 icons still carrying that double display. All the rest are good, including the "Utilities" folder as shown in the new screenshot. The other 3 are shortcuts and of course the Eileen's Lounge is a web shortcut.

If rebooting doesn't help, I'm afraid I have no idea; I hope a Windows expert will have a useful suggestion.
Best wishes,
Hans

Have you checked to make sure that the source you used for the icons is still available?

Joe
Joe,
By "the source", I assume you mean where the icons are stored?
I have a separate small partition on my E drive with all of the icons that I use.
This is the same source that I use for folder icons on the desktop, that all seem to display fine, just the desktop shortcuts that have the double? display.

It seems I found the problem and repaired it by going into WE and going to User>Local Settings>Application Data and deleting the "Iconcache.db" file and rebooting to let Windows rebuild the new DB file.
The overlay of the document icon is gone and desktop icons are as they should be. :clapping: :fanfare:

It's great that you solved the problem, but I find it a bit strange, since C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data is just an alias in Windows Vista and 7 for C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local, the location I mentioned in an earlier reply...
Best wishes,
Hans

What can I say?
I did a search for the filename, deleted what it found and Viola!
It sure sounds like we were on the same page but......?
