Character Map Anomaly

Post by BobH »

Sometimes I need to locate a special character and insert it into text. I have the Windows 7 Character Map pinned to my taskbar for easy access. Recently I've noticed that once I select a character the expanded selection box appears and will not go away. Maybe I have a mental block and just cannot see it, but I cannot find a way to free the cursor and have the selection box disappear. I can point to a different character and it will appear in the box, but I cannot get the box to go away.

Any suggestions?

:cheers: :chocciebar: :thankyou:

This is not a new bug/feature: as far as I know, Character Map has always behaved this way.
You can get rid of the selection box by:
- Selecting a different font.
- Selecting a different character set (in Advanced View).
- Selecting a different grouping (in Advanced View).
- And of course by closing and reopening Character Map :grin:
Best wishes,
Hans

I guess I've been using special characters more lately because I had never noticed this before.

Thanks for the tip, Hans!

I use a lot of special characters, particularly accented vowels as used in French and German. I found a very useful piece of inexpensive ($7.50 USD) software to be WizKey - http://antibody-software.com/web/softwa ... haracters/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I am not affiliated, just a satisfied customer.

It presents a list with special characters sorted according to accent type, punctuation, currency, math symbols, Greek letters, etc., etc. - all much easier to use than the Windows Character Map which you can never close.

Thanks for the tip!

I'll give it a try to see if it is more user-friendly than the Win 7 Character Map.
