Overnight System Change

Post by Sundog »

Windows 7 CPU left running overnight as usual, to do my 2 AM Emsisoft scan. This morning my Desktop is changed, my Start Menu is changed, Chrome no longer has my pinned tabs, my MS Keyboard and mouse need reconfiguration, my Windows Explorer replacement Directory Opus needs reconfiguration, I can't hook up to my remote site via VMware Horizon Client, etc.

Edited to add: Right-clicking Computer still shows Windows 7 Pro/SP1 64-bit. CPU shut down, restart required this AM.

1. What happened?
2. How can I recover?

1. Have you looked at your Windows Update history to see if a major update was installed overnight?
2. You could try a system restore.
Best wishes,
Hans

HansV, more than 30 updates were installed last night; most were "Security Updates."

System Restore was successful, with everything back to normal. Now, how do I attack the 30+ Windows updates? Any suggestions/links?

If you have the patience for it, you could install them in batches of, say, 5 or 10, creating a restore point before each batch.
Best wishes,
Hans

Reckon that's what I'll have to do. If I find the offender, I'll report back.

Edit: But Windows Update shows 3 Important and 6 Optional updates. How in the world did I get 30+ installed last night?
