Approx every 3 months my daughter's pc pops up a message that the users password is expiring today:
"Consider changing your password. You user password expires today." It isn't kidding; later that day the password does indeed expire.
The same dialog says to press Ctr + Alt + Delete and select 'Change password'. Trouble is, that doing that gives another dialog:
"Configuration information could not be read from the domain controller. Either because the machine is unavailable or access has been denied."
Darned if I know what all that means, but I do know that I can't change the password. As a result, for the last couple of years, every few months, I have had to go through a hack of: re-starting using the Win7 DVD, going to 'Repair your computer'; waiting for about 15 minutes while Win 7 tries to fix a non-existing need of repair (that darned well can't be cancelled out of Grrr); moving utilman.exe; using cmd prompt to install a new password; re-start and move utilman.exe back where it belongs. Getting rather sick of it.
I have tried a password recovery flash drive - didn't work on her computer.
Anyone know how to stop a password expiring E V E R?

Thanks Rudi. Sounds pretty easy.
She lives 30 min drive away and I can't get there until Wed, but will let you know how it goes.
Really appreciate your assistance.
As you are close to our latitude, I guess that tomorrow (Spring) will start to bring smiles to all at your place, whereas Hans & Co will start the long long wait for warmth.

Though its still quite nippy here in CPT, the trees are starting to bud and I see several nests being built by weavers and co. in the trees near my house...
Can't wait for the warmth!!!
Cheers

Re: Stop Windows password expiring
That message sounds like the PC thinks it is part of a Domain. What is the history of this computer? Did it used to belong to a company?
Please try
Right click Computer > Properties > Name, domain and workgroups > Change Settings > Workgroup
This should let you remove the computer from the domain and make it a normal member of a workgroup.
