I am having a challenge with the USB Controller where Windows 7 is trying to install the device but errors out. I am in a Virtual Environment using VMware.
Message:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
I have tried to update the driver and Windows could not find the driver software for the device. The device is a USB Segate FreeAgent GoFlex drive.
If I connect the drive to another laptop without the Virtual Environment, I'm able to recognize the drive.
Any suggestions,
John

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Bob,
Thanks for the link. I'll look at it when I have an opportunity. In the mean time, here are the screen shots that I am encountering. Updating the driver informs me that the current driver is the most updated one.
Regards,
John

Try downloading the latest FreeAgent software from here: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/do ... re-master/
The software is updated for Windows 8 users, but it is compatible for the other older versions too.
Install it on the Virtual OS
Plug your drive in again
See if it works now

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Rudi,
I actually started with the VMWare KB and it appears that the USB Mass Storage driver is not available on the Windows 7 Update. Some say that the Seagate driver has not been provided to Microsoft. I find that a little hard to believe but that is what I have read.
I'm looking at a laptop with Win 7 installed without the virtual environment (I can connect to the USB drive just fine). There are some system files relative to the USB Mass Storage device that I'm going to copy over to the virtual environment to see if that works.
It seems as if I'm stuck on this "roundabout",

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Rudi,
Simply copying the files over did not work.
I noticed that the USB drive has a USB 3.0 dongle. If I connect a USB 2.0 dongle to it and reconnect it to the virtual environment, I'm able to see a USB Mass Storage device in the device manager. I am unable to see the device connected with the 3.0 dongle.
It appears that the challenge is around the USB 3.0 dongle and the associated driver.

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
John,
What is the "dongle" that you are referring to?
All of the dongles that I have used were devices to allow a program to run on the "Keyed" machine.
I have never seen a "dongle" used with a external drive including USB 3.0.
Now if you mean that you are using a USB 2.0 cable vs. a USB 3.0 cable then that is a different story?

Dave,
I stand corrected that would be a USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 cable.
Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Then I would say that there is a USB 2 driver installed and not a USB 2/3 driver installed.
Does your computer have USB 2 or USB 3 hardware ports?

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Dave,
It is a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus. Don't forget I'm trying to connect the USB drive in a virtual environment.
I contacted Seagate and they responded with, "Unfortunately we do not support virtual drives and the drive may or may not work when trying to access from virtual drive."
Seagate did provide a couple of Windows 7 links for Device Manage and USB device articles. Each of which I tried prior to contacting Seagate.

Re: Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Hi John,
I'm not too sure what more I can suggest?
It's hard to test it on my side without a Seagate drive and a virtual environment.

Rudi,
I'll keep tinkering away and will post back the resolution.
Thanks to everyone who has provided advice.
