I recently purchased a new desktop with Windows 7 and I am having difficulty mapping a drive to my old desktop. I know how to do it from one XP box to another but Windows 7 is challenging me. I have setup both desktops in the same workgroup.
I disabled the firewall on the old desktop thinking that may help. One of the strange things I see when trying to map to the old desktop is that W7 prompts me for the old desktop UserId/Passwork and then another prompt from the new desktop ie UserId/Password but indicates a domain (new computer name).
Your assistance is appreciated,
John

Re: Map Drive to XP Desktop
Before doing any mapping, you need to make sure that you can browse to your shares form the other machines.
As for the password, it sure does help to have a Admin account on all machines that are the same user name and REAL password. Once these accounts are set up, they do not need to be used (logged into), just on each machine.
Once this is done, you now have a "Backdoor" on all the machines, if a user account get clobbered on any of these machines.

Re: Map Drive to XP Desktop
Dave,
I do not see the shares from the old to the new or from the new to the old. I do however see each desktop's shares if I'm on that particular desktop.
I do have an Admin account on both desktops with the same UserId/Password.
Regards,
John

What AV program, third party firewall and other "Protection" programs do you have running on EACH machine?

Dave,
I'm just in the process of installing software on the new desktop. By the way, I'm using W7 Home Premium.
Old Desktop:
Norton 360 which is disabled
New Desktop:
Windows Defender

John

Re: Map Drive to XP Desktop
Disabling Norton's will NOT always turn off the protection. You need to check the firewall arae and add the other machine(s) to the safe list or what ever Nortons uses. Defender should NOT be blocking the access, but the Windows firewall maybe.
On the Windows 7 machine check out the settings in the "Network and Sharing Center".
Make sure that the sharing is turnd on.
Also make sure that the "Workgroup: is the SAME on ALL machines.

Dave,
We seem to be making some progress. I am now receiving the error message, "You don't have permission to access the share."
The strange thing is that I am using an Admin account/password to log onto the old desktop.
Still puzzled,
John

Re: Map Drive to XP Desktop
Is there a Admin account that is the same user name and password?
It must have a real password, not just the blank enter key and the user names must match.
You do NOT need to be logged into this account, but they must be on ALL machines.
Also note, that the "My Documents" folders are protected unless they were set up to be shared on the local machine.

Dave,
I found a solution on-line. There is a registry tweak that needs to be done. Apparently W7 Home Premium has a glitch in it.
Thanks for helping me,
John

Re: Map Drive to XP Desktop
I have been using a mixture of XP, Vista and Windows 7 and have set up many other networks with a mixture and have NEVER had to do a Reg hack.
So be careful of this hack, as it just may have opened a door or two.
