I haven't been very successful in finding on the net a definitive list of visually-confusable character pairs, so I wonder whether anyone can add to my list below?
Obviously it depends on the font in which the characters are rendered (with Arial, Helvetica and other sans-serif fonts also offering m and rn).
0 O ; 1 I ; 1 L ; I L ; i I ; 8 B ; 5 S

Re: Visually-confusable character pairs
The examples that you mention are the most obvious ones; other candidates are
O Q
2 Z
6 b
9 g (i.e. g in a font such as Arial or Courier New)

Thanks, Hans - those are pretty obvious, too!

There is also lower cased C L which can look like a 'd':

Re: Visually-confusable character pairs
In many fonts I also have trouble with lower case r n which to me looks like an m = darn.
Recently Argus suggested using the browser Ctrl + to enlarge the screen when I have trouble with Captcha images and that has helped me tremendously, including with difficult to read letter combos as you've been discussing.
Of course, it does have the pain in the rear result that you have to do Ctrl - (sometimes a few times!) to put the screen back in its normal viewing mode.

Does a double v and a w count as well?
